Join us for Root Camp, an inspiring three-day nature, creativity, and heritage programme for young people aged 13–18
Set within the beautiful grounds of the Ulster Transport Museum, participants will get hands-on with nature conservation, artistic making, and citizen science. Delivered by The Conservation Volunteers, National Museums NI (CEDaR), and the Nerve Centre, the programme blends practical skills with creative activities to spark curiosity and connection with the natural world.
Root Camp is delivered by The Conservation Volunteers, Nerve Centre and National Museums NI as part of the Power Plants project.
Birds (19 August)
Explore the walled garden on a nature walk, learning how to record wildlife using the iRecord app, with the chance to try sweep netting and species identification.
Build and decorate birdboxes inspired by Northern Ireland’s industrial heritage.

Insects (20 August)
Take part in a mindful recording session, learning about transects and fit counts to build nature observation skills.
Create vital habitats for insects by building log piles, clay banks, and a hedgehog highway, adding handmade wooden signage to highlight these features.

Wildflowers (21 August)
Help mark out and prepare new wildflower areas within the walled garden, and experiment with hammer printing wildflowers onto fabric to take home or use for bunting.
Get creative with the Nerve Centre, designing your own nature-themed eco tote bag using sustainable materials.
