Catherine Mullan hails from Northern Ireland and is an Animation Supervisor with Moving Picture Company MPC. Her film credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’ Revenge, James Bond: Spectre, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1, Maleficent and X Men First Class. Mullan’s latest work as an Animation Supervisor with MPC is Disney’s new live action Dumbo directed by Tim Burton, which is due for release in March 2019.
On Friday February 1 Mullan will be at Derry~Londonderry's Brunswick Moviebowl at 10am to talk about her own career path into the VFX industry, the work of MPC and emerging creative roles and trends within the industry. She will advise students on subjects, skills and interests that enhance a career in the VFX industry give practical tips for students interested in working in this field. The talk will be followed by a screening of Guardians of the Galaxy, while Mullan will also be speaking at The Ritz Cinema, Cookstown at 12.30pm the same day.
This event is essential for Moving Image Arts students or equivalent who wish to pursue a career in the VFX industry or find out more about animation and visual effects in some of the top grossing films of the last decade.
The UK is a world leader of film VFX, shaped by the success of the Harry Potter franchise and is one of the fastest growing sectors of the film industry today. The sector is on the look out for students with strong STEAM skills in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
Working in the VFX sector demands young people who possess creativity in storytelling alongside technical skill. The ability to collaborate and work with others, solve problems creatively, manage time and resources are also essential to success in this industry.
The event is free to all Moving Image Arts students thanks to funding support from Northern Ireland Screen through Into Film Club. Northern Ireland Screen has committed to the skills development in young people entering the animation industry because of high workforce demand. Building on this commitment, the Nerve Centre has delivered the first Industry linked foundation academies in animation providing training and hands-on experience of these key job roles within the animation industry.
Into Film is supporting activity by delivering a careers focused talk series to offer young people direct access to the leading figures in industry and an opportunity to get on the road to a career in VFX.
Into Film Club is a Northern Ireland Screen schools initiative designed to reduce disadvantage and is funded by the Department of Communities. The scheme is managed by Cinemagic and the Nerve Centre, in partnership with Into Film.
