Ones To Watch Presents | Spike Lee Retrospective Double Bill
Nerve Centre
Admission: £5 + booking fee | Free for under 25s
Ones to Watch offers young people the training and skills they need to curate online and live event content for themselves as film lovers and filmmakers.
During Reel Lives our Ones to Watch group host a Spike Lee Retrospective Double Bill over two evenings showing Do the Right Thing and BlacKkKlansman.
Do the Right Thing will be followed by a talk by Stephen Butler, lecturer in Contemporary English Literature at Ulster University. Stephen specialises in genre fiction (esp. 21st century speculative fiction, crime and horror) and comic books.
His talk will discuss the cultural impact of Spike Lee's films, using both his early and more recent work to show how his films highlight issues to do with both racial and economic disparity in the USA and how little has changed on either problem in over forty years of Lee's career.
Ones to Watch presents events are free of charge for under 25s. Valid ID must be presented at the time of event for verification.

Do The Right Thing | Monday 27 March 7PM
It's the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn, and tensions are growing there, with the only local businesses being a Korean grocery and Sal's Pizzeria. Mookie, Sal's delivery boy, manages to always be at the centre of the action.
Nominated for 2 Oscars®.
“I believe that any good-hearted person, white or black, will come out of this movie with sympathy for all of the characters. Lee does not ask us to forgive them, or even to understand everything they do, but he wants us to identify with their fears and frustrations.” — Roger Ebert.
1989. USA. Director: Spike Lee. Cast: Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee. Duration: 2hrs. Cert: 18

BlacKkKlansman | Tuesday 28 March 7PM
Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department, resolves to make a name for himself and a difference in his community. He bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.
Winner of Oscar® for Best Adapted Screenplay
“BlacKkKlansman is a nuanced story of race in America, but Lee doesn’t take any chances with vagueness or ellipses, nor should he. As much as BlacKkKlansman plays with the mechanics of blaxploitation fantasy, it doesn’t leave one with any question about what’s real.” — Emily Yoshida, Vulture.
2018. USA/China. Director: Spike Lee. Cast: John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier. Duration: 2hrs 15mins. Cert: 15
