Digital Book of Kells

Digital Book of Kells

At the heart of the Nerve Centre’s creative educational programme for 2013 was the Digital Book of Kells project. The project gave every primary school child in Derry~Londonderry the opportunity to take part in the creation of a new ‘Digital Book of Kells’ for the 21st century. These skills, for both teachers and learners, are entirely transferable and will ensure a real digital skills legacy for 2013 will remain in schools for years to come.

Using Colmcille’s connection with Derry~Londonderry as an entry point, the Nerve Centre created a suite of online digital resources that allowed pupils to explore the life and learning of the Columban monasteries and to study the Celtic crosses, religious objects and illuminated manuscripts produced there between the 6th and 8th centuries. Digital artists from the Nerve Centre visited schools to support teachers and pupils as they create their own digital images and animations that bring to life the Celtic artwork and colourful vitality of the illuminated manuscripts. In the age of the e-book, the children of the city have collectively produced a new digital work of art. This project was led within schools by teachers themselves, with the Nerve Centre providing high levels of training and support but ensuring that the opportunity provided by 2013 for knowledge transfer to teachers was maximised and the strongest possible legacy was developed for the young people of the city.
