New Educational iBook On The Troubles Launched With Linen Hall Library

Thanks to funding from the Department for Communities, the Linen Hall Library, in partnership with the Nerve Centre, has recently launched an educational iBook entitled Troubled Images – The Northern Ireland Troubles and Peace Process 1968 - 2016 by Gordon Gillespie.

Aimed at key stage 3 pupils, this interactive online resource provides the post-conflict generation with a non-biased narrative of the key events in Northern Ireland’s recent past through the medium of posters. The easy-read layout includes questions and activities aimed at stimulating enquiry and promoting a greater understanding of our shared history.

The iBook can be downloaded free of charge from Apple iTunes.

Niall Kerr, Digital Resource Developer with the Nerve Centre, said: 'The Nerve Centre was delighted to work with the Linen Hall Library to produce this new, digital schools resource. By recreating the content as a digital publication, with interactive images, video content and curriculum linked activities, the iBook will help a new generation to learn about the Troubles and its impact, which will be particularly important as we approach the 50th anniversary of events marking the beginning of the Troubles.'

Julie Andrews, Director of the Linen Hall Library, said: 'It is the aim of the Linen Hall to make as many collections as possible available to as wide an audience as possible. We hope that the Troubled Images iBook is used as a resource for younger people to help understand our past from a nonbiased viewpoint.'

Thirty years ago the Library organised the first public exhibition of its posters under the banner Troubled Images. These were posters selected from the world-renowned Northern Ireland Political Collection (NIPC). In 2001, when digitisation was still in its infancy, the Library digitised over 3,500 posters and artefacts from the NIPC and made them available for the first time on a CD-ROM. In 2008 the Library published, in association with Irish publisher Colourpoint Books, Troubled Images: The Northern Ireland Troubles and Peace Process 1968 – 2007 by Gordon Gillespie. This book forms the basis for the new iBook.
