Irish director Aisling Walsh’s film tells the true story of Maud Lewis, who died in 1970, and remains one of Canada’s best-loved folk artists. Maud (Sally Hawkins), a bright-eyed, intelligent woman, is disabled by arthritis, but is determined to gain independence from her overprotective family. She answers an advertisement for a housekeeper by a 40-year-old bachelor, Everett (Ethan Hawke). She is a terrible housekeeper and spends most of her time painting. When they realise people will actually buy her cards and paintings, he supports and encourages her, helping her career to blossom.

“Richly layered, deeply felt, from the creative genius of Aisling Walsh.” New York Observer

“Sally Hawkins excels as Maud…and her performance has much of the same grace, irrepressible optimism and humour she brought to Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky.” The Independent
